Rheumatic fever and Rheumatic heart disease among clinically suspected patients with joint pain in a specialized hospital

Background: Rheumatic fever (RF) and rheumatic heart disease (RHD) are the leading causes of early cardiovascular morbidity mortality especially in developing world. Recently more emphasis is given on role echocardiography for diagnosis these diseases. Objective: Recent reliable data studies RF RHD very limited Bangladesh. Therefore, this study was done to diagnose among clinically suspected patients. Methods: This cross-sectional conducted from February June 2021 National Center Control Fever Heart Disease, Dhaka. A total 250 patients irrespective age sex with complaints joint pain were enrolled. Laboratory investigations including CBC ESR, ASO titer, CRP, ECG done. Results: Among patients, acute without carditis diagnosed 10 (4%) 15 (6%) had recurrent carditis. 63 (25.2%) patients; whom 19 (7.6%) clinical 44 (17.6%) as subclinical Acute only within 5-20 years patient 60% found 21-30 groups. About half (49.20%) between 11 age. Several abnormalities valves detected by Echocardiography; 78.2% mitral regurgitation all stenosis cases RHD. Combination aortic also present. Conclusion: The findings indicate that not negligible our country. Though result does prevalence or incidence; however, it highlights need systematic large-scale inclusion find Bangladesh Medical Res Counc Bull 2022; 48: 83-89
